In our research we found that Tudor clothes did not have pockets. It was common for people to carry pouches to hold their coins. These were tied on to their belts or clothes. We have designed and made our own Tudor pouches with working drawstrings to open and close the purses. We have developed our sewing skills by using a running stitch to make a
hem, and a stronger chain stitch to join the sides up securely. We
threaded a leather string through the hem to create the draw string.
Mr Rahi Bains came in today to lead workshops about Hinduism and Diwali. He showed us pictures of Hindu gods and explained how we could recognise them when they take different forms. We then acted out the story of Rama and Sita and learnt about how Hindus celebrate Diwali today. Finally we learnt a song and played traditional Indian instruments. We were all inspired and are now keen to find out more about this exciting religion.
This week we will be learning about the clothes the Tudors wore and designing an outfit for ourselves. Look at these videos to help you. Click HERE to see how Tudor clothes were made. Below is a video about the clothes that Tudor children wore.
We have been learning about portraits as a source of historical information. We have been looking at portraits of Henry VIII and discussed what they tell us about the man. We imagined ourselves as the Royal portrait painters and practised our art skills in drawing and painting to produce our own portraits. He looks VERY handsome as we all remembered its not a good idea to mess with a Royal Tudor!
This half-term we are going to be looking at the wonderful world of stories and linking this with our historic study. We will by writing wonderful stories of our own set in Tudor times.
In our exploration of harvest time we have been considering the inequalities that exist in the sharing of the worlds resources. We have looked at religious teachings on fairness and found that all major religions command us to care for others. The UNCRC (Article 24) also states : "Children have the right to good quality health care, to clean water, nutritious food and a clean environment, so that they will stay healthy. Rich countries should help poorer countries achieve this."
In our discussion about how we can make a difference we decided we could share more by giving to charities but also by supporting FAIR TRADE. To find out more go to http://www.oxfam.org.uk/coolplanet/kidsweb/food.htm
We have been writing poems about the wind, inspired by the works of Christina Rosetti We have tried to include rhyme, rhythm, alliteration and similes.
We talked about how important it is to be calm when we are trying to learn. We discussed techniques of calming down quickly so we can be effective learners.
